Health tips for students

In the spirit of back to school season, here are a few health tips to promote wellness throughout the school year.

Water bottle

Students should get in the habit of carrying a water bottle everywhere they go. Hydration is vital for brain and body functioning. Water helps to flush out toxins that could potentially damage the brain as well as carry nutrients to the brain to promote its health. Having a functional water bottle that is easy to carry around is a great way to increase water consumption throughout the day.

Healthy snacks

Healthy snacks are important to have stocked or prepped for the school year. Having snacks on hand as a student is important for daily nutrition and helps to regulate hunger, mood and blood sugar. That’s it fruit bars are great to have in a backpack or book bag as they do not melt and are made simply of fruit. Planner

Students are juggling multiple classes, social lives and possible jobs all at once. To avoid the overwhelming feeling of having too much going on to remember, lay it all out on a planner. Find a planner that works best for you, whether its a digital calendar, a written planner or a white board in your room. Write it down, check it off, and get it done. Manage your time in a more efficiently, increase productivity and avoid disorganization with a planner.

Prioritize sleep

As a student, sleep is often the first thing to neglect when managing homework, social lives and work. However, inadequate sleep can worsen school performance through increased difficulty focusing, learning and reacting. Furthermore, a lack of sleep can lead to feelings of frustration and worry. Therefore, sleep should be prioritized rather than neglected in a students life. Managing time more efficiently by the help of a planner as stated above, and avoidance of last minute cramming can help to better prioritize sleep.

Support system

Having quality support from advisors, friends or family is incredibly important for a student. It is easy to feel overwhelmed and alone amidst the height of school stress. Do not be afraid or ashamed to ask for help. Everyone can benefit from a bit of guidance and advice in their lives. Studies show support systems allow one to be more resilient in times of stress and uncertainty. Take advantage of the help and resources around you when you need them. Consider reaching out to classmates, friends or family and seeking out school resources to build a quality support system this school year.

Reminder

School is not the be all end all. No matter how difficult it is to gain perspective, one bad report card will not ruin your future. Work hard, meet new people, make memories and don’t focus too much on what is out of your control.
